Why Dubai is so open to “western” things?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a racist, it’s just curiosity :)

Dubai is in the Emirates right? So why do you see that in Dubai are fashion shows, American and European sport stars and movie stars visiting, mass consuming, luxury cars, etc. Aren’t these the kind of stuff that people from middle east find repulsive about the West?

It’s just that Dubai seems to break the pattern you usually see in other countries in the region, if you know what I mean :)

Dubai, the UAE or almost all GCC (beside Saudi) are more open to western things like other Islamic countries. In Dubai’s case it’s a fact that Dubai sooner or later will run out of oil (right now just around 6% of the country”s income) and the Emarate will depend on tourism and foreign investment/business. How to attract western tourists and investors when not providing an “almost” western lifestyle?

Western specialists are still needed to work in the UAE. The above said applies to this group also.

What’s wrong with sports and movie stars visiting Dubai? Mass consuming, luxury cars, fashion shows etc? Well, that’s just a matter of money. Where’s money, you’ll find these things no matter where. Only Islamic extremists, fundamentalists and uneducated people are so ignorant to call western cosumer goods repulsive. Consuming goods and/or what kind of car a person drives doesn’t tell anything about the moral values of the person.

o matter how much “luxus” and western items you’ll find, the UAE is and always be an Islamic country. Just an Islamic country which is more open minded than some others and make all people feeling welcome and comfortable.

    Take care.

Like everything in the world, it comes down to money. If the UAE want to be an affluent country then they have to compromise on some things in order to get dollars from Western tourism and business.
