Setting up Business in Dubai? Nitty gritty details needed!?

Hi all, am thinking of starting up a very small business in Dubai – in the fashion sector and I plan to have the products made in Dubai and sell them locally, mainly through online and mail order. We will also be taking part in various festivals and exhibitions to promote the products and allow customers to have a physical look at the items. One reason why this business would be a success, is simply because we can offer the same product, but at VERY good value, in comparison to local competitors:

1. Licenses do I need? if so, which one do I need for fashion?

2. In terms of regulations/trade licenses and immigration restrictions etc etc … would it be easier to produce the products outside the UAE or is it relatively easy to make the products in Dubai, without much red tape?

3. If I had to produce the products outside, what licenses would I need to sell the products within Dubai

4. Is it possible to initially set up as a sole trader and with very minimal finances?

I get the feeling that I won’t be big enough to set up in Free zones, what are my options? How do I get a visa and what is the procedure to get a visa for a small business set up like this? I am British citizen, of Pakistani origin (But I don’t have Pakistani citizenship). Thanks!

hey neelam…. firstly i would like to thank you for writing your query in detail.
    secondly as for the answers:-

    1. you need to register your company with Dubai Economic department and before you can do that you need to look for your office location because that is one of the requirements for registering a company. secondly if you are not located in any of the free zones you will need a local sponsor. while registering you can choose the activities that you want to be included in your trade license and please note that you will not be allowed to perform any other business except for the activities mentioned in the trade license. let me inform you here that the more the activities you have more you have to pay for the the registration and renewal of your trade license each year.

    2. it depends what kind of good you will be producing, in some it will be easier to produce locally and others easier to import.

    3. to import the goods from outside you need to register your company with the dubai port and customs authority and get your self an import code.

    4. i think that the minimum funds that you need to start a business here is AED 300,000 but am not sure about this part.

you can also visit http://www.dubaided.gov.ae/english/pages/default.aspx for more info and write to them.
