Is Dubai the place to be?

So many people have told me that Dubai is the place for everything these days. Fashion, Finance, Employment and the Cultural Diversity etc ect. Is this the place to be? Should a young individual go out there if they have an MBA?

about 1 year ago everyone would tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that Dubai is the place to be. However due to global economic setbacks recently the whole world is suffering. now many people will disagree on the extent to which dubai is in trouble. i personally believe that people exaggerate the trouble in Dubai.

i was there in February and it seemed slower than usual but still going.

keep in mind though that Dubai is fairly expensive to live in (however a great upside to the economic situation is that living costs are declining sharply). also the talent pool in Dubai is not limited so you need to be on top of your game.

Also as sad as this is your chances of getting a job and your salary greatly depend on your nationality. for example an American will be sought after and paid more for than an Indian or pakistani

I’ve been to Dubai twice and I didn’t like it.

    My complaints…

-too much traffic. One day I just wanted to go a few minutes away to the beach. As soon as I arrived the streets were suddenly flooded because they had won a soccer game. The simple 10 minute drive took over 2 hours trying to return because it’s tradition there to flood the streets after a big soccer victory.

-to many Indian subcontinent people. Don’t think that you can learn Arabic there or that it is an Arab country. Sure, it may be located in the Arab Gulf but most of the people are from the Indian subcontinent.

-too noisy. There’s always something playing over some loudspeaker at all hours of the night, and always some construction going on outside of your place at all hours in the day

-too expensive. If you want to enjoy the nice things they have there it’s probably not worth it anyway when you see the bill.

-it’s not very open. Kind of restricted. Like for example people will want to ask you about your family there, and if you tell them something like you are divorced it’s like a big shame. Something that is common in other parts of the world. So basically everybody just says everything is fine and goes along with their day. People don’t “keep it real” as the 90′s term goes.

…I could go on much longer but I don’t have the time

let me answer ur questions as i think from my perspective
fashion- not th ein thing in dubai . but latest trends do coem here faster as all big fasion names have their outlets here.
finance- yes soem time before it was better but now also its not bad if u have a suitable job .
    employment- it goes with finances
cultural diversity – i will give best rating for this to dubai. along with reasonable tolerance for decent freedom .

    @Abdul-infinite:

for 1~4 of the 5 points you mentioned there is one answer =bad timing

    1. soccer victory drives are announced in the newspaper sport section the day before so people avoid the streets they use for the drive.
2 could it be you’ve been to the Indian market or Ghabiba station on Friday … ;)
    3. you must have been there in Ramadan
    4. shopping in the wrong place / season
    5. not really, you must have misunderstood , or been misinformed.
